Lieutenant Gary Smith
Criminal Investigation Division

Lieutenant Gary Smith is a 20-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. After graduation from the Sheriff's Academy in 1986, he was assigned to the Corrections Division. In 1989 he was transferred to the South County Patrol Division and spent eight (8) years as a Patrol Deputy.

In 1994 he formed the department's Bicycle Patrol Team and the POST (Peace Officer's Standards and Training) Bicycle Patrol Training Course and was promoted to Sergeant in 1997. While assigned the rank of Sergeant, Gary Smith performed duties at the Corrections Division, Harbor Patrol Division, and the Economic Crimes Detail as Supervisor. Lt. Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in September 2004, and transferred to the Theo Lacy Facility as Watch Commander. Lt. Smith was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau in April 2006.
