The city motto of Dana Point is "Harboring the Good Life". This beautiful coastal community consists of approximately 6.2 square miles and cradles a fixed population of approximately 36,000 people, but on a beautiful summer day, the total population of visitors, workers and residents can be well over 100,000 people. The city is home to five star resorts, a harbor, county beach parks, a state beach, and a high school that contribute to the diverse activity within the city boundaries. Dana Point was incorporated in 1989 as a General Law city and operates under a Council/Manager form of government. There is a five-member City Council elected at large to serve four-year, over-lapping terms and each year the Council elects one of its own members to serve as Mayor for a one year period.

The city of Dana Point continues to be a leader in South Orange County by providing responsive and professional level of law enforcement services. Programs implemented by Dana Point Police Services have been recognized statewide and duplicated numerous times. They include the Special Enforcement Team (SET), the Community Support Unit, bicycle patrol and the Volunteers in Police Support (VIPS). Through the efforts of a Crime Prevention Specialist and the VIPS, a large network of Neighborhood Watch Programs has developed that includes approximately 200 block captains. Dana Point Police Services staff 26 full time deputies, 5 sergeants and five parking control officers. Two of the parking control officers are funded by, and provide service to, the Dana Point Harbor Department. Additionally, deputies patrol the beach on ATV’s during the busy summer months. Deputies respond to over 17,000 calls for service per year in the city. The city also staffs a school resource officer, community support deputies, motor officers, special enforcement officers, and contributes to the South County Directed Enforcement Team. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is proud to serve the city that prides itself in "Harboring the Good Life".
