Captain Kim Markuson
Investigations Division Commander

Captain Kim Markuson began his law enforcement career with the Orange County Sheriff's Department on May 27, 1977.  His initial assignment was to the Jail Division. Subsequent assignments included the Civil and Patrol Divisions prior to his promotion to Investigator in June 1982.  As an Investigator, Captain Markuson worked in the Warrant Detail, South General Investigations and Homicide.  He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in March 1986.  His role as a sergeant was to supervise the Sheriff's Narcotics Detail until his transfer to the Regional Narcotics Suppression Program (RNSP), the countywide, multi-agency drug enforcement task force as a team supervisor in December 1989.

Captain Markuson was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1991 and assigned as the Assistant Director of the Los Angeles Joint Drug Intelligence Group (LAJDIG). His duties included assisting the F.B.I. with the development, implementation and management of this newly formed, multi-agency, federally funded initiative. In September 1994, Captain Markuson was selected to serve as the Chief of Police Services for the Department's largest contract city, Mission Viejo. During his five-year tenure, the city enjoyed a continued and steady decline in both Part I and Part II crimes along with the reduction in the total number of traffic collisions despite an impressive growth in population.

On June 4, 1999 Captain Markuson was promoted to his current rank and assigned to the Theo Lacy Facility.  His responsibilities as the Division Commander of this maximum-security jail included administering the day-to-day activities of the 353 sworn and professional staff along with management oversight for the 100 employees of food services for the entire jail system.  The 1999-2000 budgets for both operations were $40 million.

On July 28, 2000 Captain Markuson was transferred and re-assigned as the Division Commander for the Special Investigation Division (SID).  He was also recommended by Sheriff Carona and selected by the executive board to act as the Program Manager for RNSP.

On March 28, 2003 Captain Markuson also assumed responsibility of Criminal Investigations as well as Special Investigations. These two new Bureaus now fall under one Investigations Division and report directly to Captain Markuson.

Captain Markuson earned his Masters of Arts Degree in Behavioral Science with an emphasis in Negotiation and Conflict Management from California State University, Dominguez Hills.  In addition, he has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from California State University, Long Beach and is a lifetime member of the California Narcotics Officer's Association (CNOA).
