The Central Jail Complex is located next to the Sheriff's Headquarters building in Santa Ana. It is comprised of three separate jail facilities. The Central Men's Jail and Women's Jail opened in 1968 and are traditional style cell block and dormitory facilities. In 1988 in order to facilitate a prompt, accurate and legal booking/release process, as well as easing the overcrowding conditions in the Orange County Jail system the Intake Release Center commonly referred to as the "IRC" was built. The IRC's modular style housing areas provides a secure environment for both inmates and staff. Approximately 2,664 inmates are housed at the Central Jail Complex.
