NEWS RELEASE: Coroner Division Seeking Public’s Assistance Identifying Body Found in Ocean off Huntington Beach

News ImageOn Thursday, December 31, 2015, a body was located in the ocean, approximately 1 mile off shore from the entrance to Huntington Harbor. The deceased person is believed to be that of a middle-aged male adult. Based on the preliminary investigation, Coroner investigators believe the body was in the ocean for up to 6 weeks. The body is decomposed and presents a physical condition consistent with prolonged exposure to salt water.

SPECIAL BULLETIN: Three Inmates Escape From OC Jail

News ImageOn Friday, January 22, 2016, inmates NAYERI, Hossein, 37, TIEU, Jonathan, 20, and DUONG, Bac, 43, were discovered unaccounted for at the Orange County Central Men’s Jail. An immediate search was conducted of the Central Jail Complex and adjacent Civic Center area of Santa Ana; however, all indications are that the inmates escaped the jail and have fled the area. Based on the preliminary investigation, the inmates were last confirmed to be seen during the morning hours of Friday, January 22, 2016.

Message from Sheriff Hutchens- Jail Escape

News Image“Last night, three inmates escaped from Men’s Central Jail in Santa Ana. We are utilizing every resource available to ensure these inmates are brought back into custody as quickly as possible. As Sheriff, my utmost concern and primary responsibility is the safety of each Orange County resident. I take this situation very seriously and the men and woman of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will not rest until all three men are captured.

“The three escapees, Hossein Nayeri, Jonathan Tieu, and Bac Tien Duong, are dangerous criminals. My investigations team is working around the clock with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the Orange County Probation Office, the U.S. Marshals and the FBI. The identification was made via fingerprints. There is no available picture of Mr. Munguia. Mr. Munguia had a tattoo on his left shoulder that said, “I {heart} PIYO.” (See below for picture of actual tattoo)

NEWS RELEASE: DUI Taskforce Sweep Apprehends 21 Suspects

Some think if they don't show up for a court hearing, the police won't have the manpower to come find them. If your violation is a DUI, don’t count on it. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department DUI Task Force with dozens of outstanding arrest warrants fanned out into neighborhoods in search of high risk DUI offenders on February 22, 2016. Officers attempted service on 35 warrants. Five offenders were arrested who either failed to show up for a court date or violated terms of their probation in an outstanding DUI case. Another 16 turned themselves in following the attempted warrant service.

NEWS RELEASE: Court Sting Stakeout Operations Results in Three Arrests

On Monday, March 14, 2016, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department conducted an undercover 'Court Sting’ operation at Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach. Deputies staked out offenders whose licenses where suspended/revoked and also drivers who were driving without a license after being told of their license suspension or who had never been issued a driver’s license. Thirteen offenders were followed by deputies from courtrooms to their vehicles to ensure that they were not driving. While some offenders complied with the law and had other means of transportation, three individuals in court proceeded to get behind the wheel and drove away from the court house.

NEWS RELEASE: OC Child Exploitation Task Force Arrests Coach for Engaging in Lewd Behavior

On Wednesday, April 13, 2016, investigators from the Orange County Sheriff's Department’s Special Victims Detail (SVD) and the Orange County Child Exploitation Task Force (OCCETF) arrested Troy Linehan Crutchfield, 26, Costa Mesa, on charges related to sending harmful matter to a minor electronically and communicating with a minor to engage in lewd behavior. Crutchfield is suspected of taking and sending lewd videos of himself to a minor. Crutchfield was arrested following an investigation that started in March 2016

NEWS RELEASE: UPDATED INFORMATION: Sheriff’s Investigators Seek Public’s Assistance in Identifying Body Found

On January 6, 2014, unidentified female remains were found in the Casper’s Wilderness Park (Rural South East area of Orange County). Based on the preliminary investigation it is estimated the remains may have been exposed to the elements for a period of at least six months. After preliminary testing, it has been determined the remains are of a petite female, at least thirty years of age, shoulder length wavy dark brown hair with light colored highlights. The decedent had a very distinct gold colored dental bridge on her left lower jaw and possibly had a broken nose at some point in her life.

Historically, the fifth of May commemorates Mexico’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Present-day celebrations can lead to drunk driving—and there’s no victory in that. If you are planning to party this Cinco de Mayo, keep this number in mind: 343 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes over the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend in 2014. Of those 343 people who lost their lives, 34 percent (116) died in drunk-driving crashes. Sadly, almost one out of five (17%) of all the drivers in fatal crashes that weekend had blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .15 % or higher—almost two times the legal limit

On May 11, 2016 an attempted sexual assault occurred on the Oso Creek Trail in Mission Viejo near Marguerite Pkwy. and La Paz Road. At approximately 3:30pm, a female was walking the trail when the suspect grabbed her and pulled her to the ground. The suspect attempted to pull the female’s pants off. The female fought back and the suspect fled the area. The suspect is described as male, unknown race, 5’10”, possibly 50 years old, husky build, black flat top hair cut wearing a white shirt, khaki pants and work boots.

On Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at approximately 8:50pm suspects entered Cal-Med Pharmacy and ordered victims to the ground. One suspect had a handgun. Loss was a small amount of cash and approximately $3,000 in prescription medication.

NEWS RELEASE: Home Invasion Attempted Robbery in El Modena

On Wednesday May 18, 2016 at approximately 8:50 a.m. a home invasion robbery occurred on the 18000 block of East Vine Avenue in El Modena. At the time of the home invasion, one female and one male were inside the residence. The suspect approached the female victim and demanded money while threatening her with a knife. Hearing the commotion, the male victim confronted the suspect and sustained a cut to his face during an ensuing altercation. The injury sustained was not life threatening.

United States Coast Guard Recognizes the Orange County Sheriff’s Department

On June 22, 2016, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Los Angeles presented the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) Harbor Patrol/Marine Operations Bureau (Harbor Bureau) with a plaque in recognition of the mutual relationship and distinguished support established between both entities. After 54 years, the USCG Air Station Los Angeles located at the Los Angeles International Airport is closing, and shifting operations to Naval Base Ventura County in Point Mugu, California. With the USCG Air Station Los Angeles closing, USCG Commanding Officer (CO) Thomas Cooper presented the dedicatory plaque on behalf of the officers and crew of Air Station Los Angeles to Training Deputy John Cooper of the OCSD Harbor Bureau in Newport Beach, California.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Person of Interest in Fatal Motorcycle Accident Identified

On August 1, 2016 at approximately 2:50 p.m. a fatal vehicle vs. motorcycle accident occurred on Santiago Canyon Road in Modjeska Canyon. The male passenger on the motorcycle died, and the female passenger on the motorcycle was severely injured. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. It was immediately discovered that the vehicle was stolen from a Santa Ana tow yard, and investigators began looking for a person of interest seen on video stealing the vehicle from the tow yard.

Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has hired Mary Izadi as the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s first Constitutional Policing Advisor. Ms. Izadi was selected from a group of well-qualified applicants by an outside panel of constitutional policing experts after an open recruitment process. September Declared “California Pedestrian Safety Month” to Address Pedestrian Safety Crisis

In answer to rapidly increasing numbers of pedestrians being killed and injured on California roadways, the California State Senate has passed a resolution declaring September as “California Pedestrian Safety Month.” The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will be joining with other law enforcement agencies, city and state transportation agencies, pedestrian advocates and walking clubs to promote public awareness aimed at both drivers and pedestrians alike to always be aware of each other and share the road responsibly.

"Golden Hub of Innovation Award" in Public Safety

The Association of California Cities Orange County (ACC-OC) presented The Orange County Sheriff’s Department with the “Golden Hub of Innovation” award in Public Safety today for their series of community presentations on the 3Gs: Guide, Guard and Govern. The presentations provide parents with the proper tools to address drug related issues among teens.

OCSD Career Fair Schedule of Events

#JoinOCSD at our Career Fair on Saturday October 1, 2016 from 10am-5pm at the Tustin Training Academy at 15991 Armstrong Avenue, Tustin CA. This is a family-friendly event showcasing the diverse Orange County Sheriff's Department. In addition to information about open positions within the department, there will be K9 demos, deputy sheriff info sessions, obstacle course demos, OCSD helicopter, bomb squad, SWAT, and much more. A Dose of Reality About Opioids

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department presented “A Dose of Reality About Opioids” Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Los Alamitos High School, the first of four to be held in the month of October. The next meeting will be held on the next three Thursdays of October.

“5 to Drive” Campaign Helps Parents Prepare, Protect Teen Drivers

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during National Teen Driver Safety Week October 16-22, 2016 to promote the “5 to Drive” campaign,encouraging parents to talk to their teens about the rules of the road whenthey are behind the wheel.

Volunteers Team Up to Build Anaheim Community Playground

Yesterday, 40 OCSD employees volunteered on their own time to help KaBOOM!, Target, and the Community Action Partnership of Orange County to build a playground at the Anaheim Independencia Center in unincorporated Anaheim. In just five hours, they completely updated the playground structure and added shade structures and picnic tables at the Center. This is what community policing looks like- coming together to make the community better and reminding us all that #PlayMatters.

OCSD Investigators Warn of Auto and Check Fraud Scam

Investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) are warning the community of an ongoing scam and asking for the public’s assistance in locating two suspects.

Clinton Charles Rose, 35, and Lauren Marie Conkey, 23, have been identified as suspects in a number of auto and identity theft cases. Rose and Conkey are suspected of contacting victims through various web sites to purchase vehicles from private party sellers. They contact the victim, present fictitious checks and identification, and then take possession of the vehicle. They are suspected of then falsifying documents to resell the stolen vehicle to another victim.

Investigators Seek Public’s Assistance in Identifying Theft Suspect

Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a male suspect involved in taking packages off the front porch of a residence in Yorba Linda.
