With Halloween around the corner, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has a list of tips and tricks to help keep you and your family safe this holiday! Whether you’ll be at home passing out candy or taking your kids trick or treating follow these tips to ensure a safe night for everyone: • Children should always be accompanied by an adult while going around the neighborhood • Older kids trick-or-treating should create a route with their parents ahead of time so parents know where they will be at all times • Only approach houses that are well-lit, and do not walk inside strangers homes • Carry a flashlight when walking around the neighborhood and use reflective tape on costumes/outerwear • Stay in familiar neighborhoods, on sidewalks, and do not walk in the streets. Be extra cautious when crossing intersections and look out for cars • Parents should inspect their children’s candy before they eat it. If it looks like it has been open or the wrapping is loose, it should be thrown away • If you will be driving, be vigilant of trick-or-treaters crossing the road • If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic, or on the left side of the street • Only cross the street at designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals • Stay away from unknown pets or animals • Be aware of your surroundings and if you see any suspicious activity, call 9-1-1 or the OCSD non-emergency line 714-647-7000 or 949-770-6011
