The temporary suspension will be in effect from Saturday, March 14, through Monday, March 16. The Sheriff’s Department on March 16 will reassess whether to extend the suspension.

SANTA ANA, Ca. (Feb. 4, 2020) – The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an evidence case review of more than 22,000 cases. The case review, conducted collaboratively with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA), comes after two audits conducted from February 2018- February 2019 identified issues with deputies booking evidence outside of Department policy. Fifteen deputies were investigated by OCSD for evidence booking issues identified in the audits and referred to the OCDA for possible criminal prosecution.

NEWS RELEASE: Unborn child of pregnant Orange County Jail Inmate pronounced dead

Santa Ana, Ca. (July 30, 2019) – An in-custody death of an unborn child occurred at the University of California Irvine Medical Center in Orange, CA. On July 27, 2019, a 30-year-old inmate housed at the Orange County Jail’s Intake and Release Center was transferred to OC Global Medical Center related to her pregnancy. Later that day, she was transferred to UCI Medical Center, where it was determined her unborn child, estimated to be approximately 27 weeks, was deceased.

SANTA ANA, Ca- (July 25, 2019) – On Thursday, July 25 at approximately 9:45 a.m., members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Detail arrested Daniel Methe, 44, at his home in Yorba Linda for child molestation. Methe is suspected of committing multiple lewd acts on a teenage girl when she was between the ages of 13-15 beginning in 2011. He is currently in custody at the Orange County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

Russell Bernardino, of Mission Viejo, was arrested at approximately 8 a.m. at his residence in Mission Viejo. He is currently in custody at the Orange County Jail, with bail set at $100,000.

In-Custody DeathSANTA ANA, Ca. (July 15, 2019) – A 44-year-old inmate was pronounced dead this morning after being transported to the hospital. Deputies were called to assist the inmate in his cell at the Theo Lacy Facility at approximately 8:20 a.m. Deputies responded and located the inmate unresponsive with no obvious signs of trauma on his body. Deputies rendered medical aid and called for additional medical assistance. The inmate was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased approximately an hour later.

Temporary Closure of Musick Jail to begin July 18

SANTA ANA, Ca. (July 11, 2019) – In March 2019, Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Don Barnes announced changes to Orange County Jail operations, including the temporary closure of the James A. Musick Facility in Irvine and ending the agreement with the Federal Government to house Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees. On July 10, 2019, the last detainees were transferred from Orange County Sheriff’s custody, and the temporary closure of Musick will begin on July 18, 2019.

Dispatcher Katie Howard received one such call in her first week off training. A mother had inadvertently fell asleep on her seven-week-old baby, and the baby had died. It was one of three calls involving young children that OCSD dispatchers fielded that week.

These 40 students from three Orange County high schools visited the Crime Lab and Coroner Division on Friday, March 1, for a behind-the-scenes look at the function of these two busy divisions of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

These are the tenets of crisis negotiation, but the process is much more nuanced and complex than it sounds.

It was approaching 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when the mother of a 3-year-old called the Sheriff’s Department to report the child’s father refused to release her daughter. Her ex, the woman told dispatchers, was acting strangely and had two of his firearms laid out on a table inside the home.

Fighting Fentanyl: How OCSD is fighting the opioid crisis

Across the nation, the opioid crisis continues to ravage communities and claim new victims every day, including here in Orange County.

The most dramatic change law enforcement has seen in this recent epidemic has been the introduction of fentanyl – a highly potent synthetic opioid that is strong enough to cause an overdose with as little as 2 milligrams.

Since January, OCSD narcotics teams have intercepted 12.5 kilograms of this deadly drug and arrested seven people attempting to sell and transport it. That amount is enough for roughly 6 million people – nearly twice the county’s population -- to fatally overdose.

NEWS RELEASE: Self-identified police officer from Mexico arrested for transporting more than 50 lbs. of meth

SANTA ANA, Ca. (October 10, 2018)- On October 9, 2018, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Highway Interdiction Team initiated a traffic stop for vehicle code violations on the northbound I-5 freeway between Orange and San Diego counties. The driver, Miguel Patron, 41, Ensenada, identified himself, stated he was a police officer in Mexico and handed the deputy his police identification. Patron was extremely nervous and several criminal indicators were identified by the deputy conducting the traffic stop.

LAKE FOREST, Ca. (October 2, 2018) - On Monday October 1, 2018, at 5:50 am deputies responded to a call of unknown trouble at the Forest Glen apartments on Farthing Street in Lake Forest. A resident saw a male collapsed outside in a courtyard with significant wounds and called the Sheriff’s Department. The male, a Hispanic man in his twenties, was pronounced deceased at the scene and a homicide investigation began. The identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.

OCSD Investigators Seeking Additional Victims of Child Annoyance Suspect

Santa Ana, Calif. (April 12, 2017)- On Wednesday, April 11, OCSD North Investigations and Special Victims Unit investigators arrested Mike Patrick Thomas, 50, of Tustin, on child annoyance charges related to inappropriate communication and contact with a female juvenile. Thomas is believed to have engaged in inappropriate contact, text messaging and conversations with the victim. During the investigation, it was discovered that a few years ago, Thomas was accused of inappropriate contact with another minor, who has since graduated from high school.
